about

We recorded this on a weekend in November 1991 along with her Majesty and held it back. Derek and me sat opposite each other and played our acoustic guitars live. Mark’s bass in the chorus is dynamite. It’s has quite a complex arrangement with soft and hard vocals and we spent a lot of time rehearsing it. Gav was always the perfectionist in those days and I think the great arrangement was down to him. I’d been listening a lot to the first Fairport Convention album and the guitar is stolen from one of those songs. Weirdly when I went back and listened to the Fairport album on Spotify recently I couldn’t hear any guitar or song which sounded like Bird has flown. It was like there was a song ghost who had disappeared when I tried to look for him. We were running out of time in the studio and that’s why we never fixed the little out of tune singing bit in the middle. It’s kind of funny now to hear that when everything is so in tune these days.
